A collective of human rights and environmental organizations, including the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH), the Basel Action Network (BAN), and the NGO Shipbreaking Platform, has united to urge the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to prioritize the clean and safe recycling of the Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessel known as Safer. This global coalition emphasizes the importance of upholding international law and the UNDP's own ethical and sustainability policies in managing the vessel's recycling process. Expressing deep concern, these NGOs highlight the potential hazards associated with scrapping the FSO at notorious South Asian shipbreaking yards renowned for their detrimental impact on worker safety, public health, and delicate ecosystems.
